So just days after the rather controversial Royal Rumble pay-per-view (where everyone bitched about Daniel Bryan not being in the match) WWE has been hit with another bombshell with another possible major departure.
Reports have indicated that the “Best In The World” CM Punk has left the WWE and returned home to Chicago after a heated confrontation with one, Vince McMahon.
It is being said that Punk was upset with the direction of the company, particularly with part-timers returning at Wrestlemania to take the spotlight. He was amongst those involved in the “YESMovement”, backing up Daniel Bryan after he was absent from the Royal Rumble match. Punk also has concerns about his health and his contract is supposedly set to expire in July.
So just before RAW CM Punk simply said “Fuck It” and bailed – resulting in the writers having to rewrite RAW at the last-minute. Which is why Kofi Kingston vs Alberto Del Rio went on for so long.
Here’s my view-point about it (assuming all of this was true)…
CM Punk has a contractual obligation to the WWE and a moral obligation to the fans to give them the very best each and every night. Walking out like this seems very unprofessional for Punk to do and it seems childish that Punk would simply quit because he didn’t like where things were going. Personally speaking, I believe Punk should’ve just let go of his pride and just waited. CM Punk seemed destined to go to toe with Triple H at Wrestlemania 30. That’s a big gig for any wrestler. Even if he got beat (which I doubt would happen) Punk would still have a lot of momentum going into the last couple of months of his WWE contract. You’re telling me CM just couldn’t wait for that period where the WWE would no doubt give him the send-off he deserved?
Punk right now just seems ultra-bitter and there’s really no reason for him to. Yes, I predicted that Punk would’ve won the Rumble and I believed that either him or Roman Reigns should have won it. But if you don’t win it…. so what?
- Chris Jericho
- Rob Van Dam
- Randy Savage
- Ultimate Warrior
- Kurt Angle
All of these guys have never won the Rumble. That doesn’t mean they aren’t legends of the WWE. CM Punk was in more high-profile matches than anyone in 2013. How many guys can say they fought The Rock, Undertaker, Chris Jericho and Brock Lesnar in the same year? And considering how rare it is for these guys to be in the WWE, Punk should consider it an honor that he got all of those matches in one year. But right now, he’s unsatisfied with the direction of the company and his position in it?
And even if the Brock Lesnars and the Batistas are coming in to take spotlight. WWE are making those decisions for financial reasons. Because they’re a business. If those guys get the PPV buy-rates up, Punk and the rest of the superstars get paid more. It’s as simple as that.
But if Punk really was disgruntled and wanted to leave, what he shouldn’t have done is do a Stone Cold and “take his ball and go home”. Does he believe that he’s THAT high of a priority for WWE that he could just get up and leave? This seems so selfish of Punk to do and you noticed that the fan dismay of Bryan not being in the Rumle has suddenly halted because Punk “left” the company? Is this just Punk being a huge attention-seeker or… is it a work?
It could very well be a huge ploy by WWE to shift the focus off Daniel Bryan by putting it on CM Punk. If it is a work, then it’s being done very well. As far as I’m concerned, I’m not believing anything until WWE.com releases an offical statement on Punk’s status.
